Chapter Nine

The weather so far had been pretty mild for November in western New York. There had been a few dustings of snow, but for their area, that was nothing. The locals knew how to drive in the snow.

But blizzards were different. And lake-effect snow, when cold air from Canada picked up moisture traveling across the Great Lakes and dumped it on all the drivers trying to get to families to celebrate Thanksgiving, could be even more treacherous.

They’d left Lakeside on the afternoon before Thanksgiving, heading for Josh’s mother’s house. She had practically begged them to spend the night Wednesday so that they’d be there for the traditional Anderson Thursday-morning waffle breakfast.

They’d been on the road for less than an hour when they realized the lake-effect snow band they were supposed to drive out of was following right on top of them. The flakes coming down formed a curtain they could barely see through. The wind howled, and drifts accumulated on the road faster than Josh thought possible.

“Mom told me we should stay home after she saw the forecast, but I told her we were going in your Jeep so she didn’t have to worry about the roads.” Traffic had slowed to a crawl.

Gin squinted out the windshield. “This band wasn’t supposed to move north. The four-wheel drive helps, but it’s visibility that’s the problem right now.” They could barely see the taillights of the vehicles in front of them through the wall of white battering them. “I don’t think the plows are going to be able to keep up with this.”

If they hadn’t been trying to drive through it, the blanket of snow might have been cozy and pleasant. But they were being attacked by wind and snow so heavy they could be buried at any time, even while still moving forward.

Then she gasped as the car in front of them fishtailed on the slippery road. Josh was afraid they were going to plow right into it, but Ginny managed to steer around it. Then he worried the car behind them wouldn’t be able to stop in time and would crash into them.

“It’s nothing but white-outs.” The tension was thick in Gin’s voice.

Josh pulled up the National Weather Service app on his phone. It didn’t look good. “Let’s take the next exit and head back.”

Gin’s fingers were white-knuckled on the steering wheel. “I think it’s too late for that. I wouldn’t be surprised if they close this section of the thruway down. We should find a place to spend the night.”

“I think you’re right.” He’d heard about vehicles getting stranded on the thruway overnight or even longer, during bad snowstorms like this.

“I really don’t want us to get stranded out here.” He’d never heard her so tense. “Keep an eye out for the exit sign—any exit sign. I don’t want to take my eyes off the road.”

Drivers in front and behind them must have had the same idea, as they took the exit too. Tension sat like a rock in Josh’s stomach.
